Synopsis[]

First synopsis
AFTER EVERYTHING, the fifth and final installment of the worldwide phenomena, finds Tessa and Hardin living separate lives after Hardin published his revealing book without her knowledge. Alone in England, Hardin retreats into drinking and other harmful habits. To make things worse, he’s suffering from writer’s block and may have to return his sizable advance if he doesn’t finish a new manuscript soon.

Rather than give in to his demons, Hardin starts to realize that the only way to move forward – and have any chance of winning back Tessa – is to right wrongs from his past. He travels to Portugal to visit Natalie, a woman he once treated terribly. By spending time with Natalie and realizing she has moved on, Hardin is finally able to forgive himself and envision a bright future with the woman he loves.

Meanwhile, back in the States, Landon and Nora prepare for their upcoming wedding – where Tessa and Hardin will be in attendance. Can the couple who have been through it all forgive each other and make the ultimate commitment?[2]

Notes and Trivia[]

  • This is the first film to not share a novel title. However, After Everything is the start of a quote in the epilogue of After Ever Happy (novel) when Hardin sums up his relationship with Tessa.
    • This is also the first film to tackle two books at a time, with After Everything finishing the story that began in After Ever Happy and showing the events of Before.
    • The font for "Before" and its involvement is directly mentioned during the Lisbon flashback scene, after Hardin is rejected by Natalie. The card for the flashbacked reads, "Five years Before".
  • It is unknown if After Everything ties into the untitled sequel or untitled prequel that were ordered in 2021.
  • Josephine Langford's role in the film was heavily debated amongst fans, as her character Tessa Young wasn't featured in promotional material after the film was announced. Many fans noticed she did not go to Bulgaria with Hero Fiennes Tiffin and the rest of the cast to film new footage for After Everything.
    • In an interview with Reel Talker on September 5, 2022, Josephine Langford was asked if she would ever do another After movie or return to the character of Tessa. She replied with "no comment" then elaborated that she's finished the films and thinks Tessa's story is done for now.[6]
    • Josephine's role in the film was confirmed during a trailer released after an international viewing of Beautiful Disaster, in which Tessa appears several times in the trailer.
    • Josephine will have a reduced role in the film, as her scenes were filmed in 2020 and not in Portugal with the rest of the new cast.[7]
  • Despite Castille Landon being credited as the director of After Everything, she did not direct the entire film. The last fifteen minutes (Landon's wedding and Hessa's flashforward) were filmed in 2020 by Castille Landon as part of After Ever Happy. The rest of the film was new footage shot in Portugal.[8]
  • After Everything has a runtime of 1 hour 35 minutes. This makes it the shortest film in the After franchise.
    • After was 1 hour 46 minutes, After We Collided was 1 hour 45 minutes, After We Fell was 1 hour 39 minutes, and After Ever Happy was 1 hour 59 minutes.
  • The first teaser trailer for After Everything premiered on December 23, 2022, and featured Hero Fiennes Tiffin (Hardin Scott), Louise Lombard (Trish Daniels), and Stephen Moyer (Christian Vance).
  • New cast members Benjamin Mascolo and Mimi Keene were announced on March 30th, 2023. They will play Sebastian and Natalie respectively.[9][10]
  • UK and US viewers got a special sneak peek at After Everything following the screening of Beautiful Disaster, a movie from the producers of After.
  • The first list of release dates, the trailer, and official logo were released on May 1, 2023.
  • The film was officially rated R on June 14, 2023.
  • During the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, a fan reached out to actress Arielle Kebbel to show support for the strike, as the actress revealed she wasn't compensated by Netflix for many of her appearances in films/TV. These included After We Fell and After Ever Happy. The fan shared their hope that she had been properly compensated for her work being included in After Everything, since much of the supporting casts footage from After Everything was shot during After Ever Happy. Arielle confirmed that she had not been.[11]
  • Cinematic Soundscapes released a soundtrack album for the film that features the film's original music composed by George Kallis. The soundtrack will be released digitally on September 13 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon.[12]
  • Several scenes were taken from other films and placed into After Everything because the series stars were not asked to film new content.
    • Tessa and Hardin arguing when she finds his book is taken from After Ever Happy.
    • Tessa rolling over to check her phone and seeing Hardin's text message is from After We Fell.
    • When Hardin is in the bar, he imagines watching Tessa dancing for him instead of the other girls there. Tessa's footage from the club is a longer version of her scene in After We Collided, just with some new angles and dialogue that wasn't used in the final cut of After We Collided.
    • When Hardin is floating in the ocean, he remembers Tessa being in the lake. This flashback is from After.
    • During Hardin's boxing scene, all the footage used of Tessa is from After We Collided and After We Fell. However, a plot hole is made out of the use of Hardin "remembering" Tessa kissing Trevor and the stranger in the club. Not only was Hardin not present when these incidents happen, but Tessa didn't tell him about the kisses. The closest thing she mentioned was that she kissed a guy at the club.
  • Dylan Sprouse is credited as Trevor Matthews despite not appearing at all in the final cut of the film.
  • Two characters mention that Hardin's book After is being made into a movie. One of the girls thinks Harry Styles should play Hardin. This is a reference to the real After novel, which was originally a fan fiction about Harry Styles.
  • Tessa mentions it's been 25 months since she last saw Hardin.
  • In the end scene, Tessa is holding an envelope when Hardin kisses her bump and her. In the final cut of the film it's unknown what is in the envelope or what Hardin says to Tessa after kissing the bump. In an Instagram reel, Aya Ivanova (Emery) revealed the unused footage of the scene.[13]
    • Hardin bends down and kisses the bump, saying "Hi, Auden." This is in reference to Hessa's second child in the book series, a son named Auden.
    • Tessa tells Emery that "her cousin" is having a birthday. Hardin asks when it is, and she tells him its in two weeks.
    • Mentioning a "cousin" is a reference to Landon and Nora's daughter in the book series, Addelyn Gibson.
  • During the end scene, Hardin comes home and picks up Emery, though what he tells her isn't audible over the music. Aya Ivanova (Emery) posted the unedited scene on her Instagram, revealing that Hardin says "Daddy has brought you a bedtime story." She also revealed that Emery is five years old in the scene.[14]
