On April 19, 2021, it was confirmed that the sequel was in the works with Castille Landon writing and directing the project. The sequel will follow Tessa and Hardin’s children, Emery and Auden, and their cousin Addy Gibson. The team behind the forthcoming films sees the continuation of the story as a way to reach the next generation of After fans.
Director and writer Castille Landon released a statement to TeenVogue about the film:
- Emery, Auden, and Addy are quite beloved by the fans. We’ve all gotten a lot of inquiries about what happens with the kids. It’s really amazing actually to see how interested the fanbase is in those characters, even though they are really only superficially introduced in the books. People have latched onto them because of their love for Hardin and Tessa. As I’m rereading the books to kind of pull it forward into this next generation, there are a lot of things that the first time I read it didn’t quite click because I read them a while ago,” Landon says. “But now as you see shows like Euphoria and Generation, it’s like ‘oh wow, there’s definitely different complexities to deal with as we move forward.
She later confirmed that casting has not gone underway as the plot is still "being hammered out".
